Propulsion

RABOESCH Brass Propellers

In the full size marine world, propellers today remain the most popular method of propulsion for motor vessels. In the past, ship builders used just two blade propellers because the capacity/power of the propulsion engines was low.

Over the years, with increased engine power came the new problem of 'cavitation' and vibration. During cavitation, water in the region of the propeller blade changes to vapour due to a reduction in local water pressure. Erosion of the propeller surface occurs a a result of cavitation. Thus, multi-blade propellers with large surface areas were developed to combat these problems.

After 1950 engine power increased to levels that led to the onset of (sometimes) dangerous vibration. That's why manufacturers developed propellers with "Skewed blades" (see our Series 170/173 and 179/180 and 158/159). These blades are characterized by a slight 'banana' shape to them. Vibration and cavitation were reduced as a result. For ships with low propeller loading that need to be silent, it is usual to employ propellers with many blades and relatively small surface areas. In model ships, cavitation will start at 5000 RPM with a 70-mm propeller. Propellers that have the correct scale dimensions plus high power output remain important to achieve correct scale speed from your ship modes. This ear, the "Raboesch®" company has produced an entirely new range of propellers designed to satisfy all dynamics and scale requirements while also increasing the range of applications for which Raboesch propellers are suitable. During the design of our propellers we have tried to compromise between the conflicting requirements of power output and correct scale proportion. Our propellers are made from brass and are delivered in left-hand or right-hand versions. You can choose from M3 - M4 - M5 metric and - 3/16" screw threads. In addition, we have enlarged our range by introducing extra stainless steel shafts (see code 350-61/68 on page 14) in order to cater for every eventuality in coupling/shaft/propeller choice when fitting out your model.
